Slice your bread. Serve with the butter board. Spread some of the butter on your bread before enjoying.

Hint: to soften your butter, take it out of the refrigerator about 2-3 hours before creating your butter board. This will get your butter to the perfect texture without melting it at all.

Substitutions

  • Butter - to cut down on salt, use unsalted butter. For extra flavor us salted butter. You can also use a vegan butter if you need a dairy free alternative. A good butter is definitely important though since this is the main ingredient.
  • Roasted Garlic - use raw garlic for a stronger, more potent flavor. You can also use garlic paste to spread on top.
  • Bread - swap out for a gluten free bread if you have a gluten restriction. You can swap out different types of bread too. A classic is french bread but sourdough or any other artisan breads pair well also.

Variations

These butter boards are an open canvas and can be paired with a variety of different toppings.

  • Spicy - add a pinch of red pepper flakes on top or some chopped up peppers. You can also drizzle chili oil on top.
  • Deluxe - add truffle oil for an upscale level of flavor.
  • Cheesy - add parmesan cheese on top of some mozzarella for a cheesy addition. You can melt the cheese and create a cheese sauce for a delicious rendition. Then you'll almost have a deconstructed cheesy garlic bread.

Equipment

For this recipe, you will need a small charcuterie board. You will also need a knife to spread the butter. I also suggest a small serving knife to spread the butter on your bread.

Storage

You can cover your butter board with plastic wrap and save for up to about a week. Some items you add on top of your butter board might not last as long as others so some might need to be removed if you are saving it.

These ingredients can be wrapped up in plastic wrap and frozen for up to 2 months. I don't suggest leaving the butter on the board, I would remove it at this point.

Top tip

Scrape the extra butter off of the board and add to a small bowl. Mix in all of the toppings. After that scoop your now roasted garlic compound butter in the middle of a piece of plastic wrap. Roll the compound butter in the plastic wrap in a cylinder shape. Place the refrigerator and you have a simple compound butter recipe. We love slicing compound butter and adding it on top of our steak once it comes off the grill and is resting before slicing. Depending on the different toppings you add, you can create a variety of compound butter recipes.

FAQ

What is the best kind of salt to sprinkle on top?

I prefer either a flaky sea salt or kosher salt. I prefer a more coarse salt that adds a stronger flavor.

Absolutely, if you take butter off of the board and spread it on a french baguette and bake it you will get the best garlic bread ever. Talk about flavor!
